Painted with acrylic on canvas, Autumn Lakes I (September 2021) was the first colour landscape painted by Esther Edwardes. The painting was inspired by a small mountain tarn, pictured below, situated between Grasmere and Elterwater.
‘In this painting, the browns, yellows and reds of the dry grass and bracken mix harmoniously with the vibrant greens and purples of the fresh grass, ferns and heather. I painted colours which evoke the lush abundance of summer, contrasting with the crackling of dry bracken and scorched grass. The expansive freedom of the lake district is created with distant blues and purples whilst soft greys convey the rocky, wild terrain.’
