Often struggling to depict the feeling evoked by a space, Esther was inspired by the colour grids of Stanley Whitney and the colour relationships in the landscapes of Olga Davenport.
Esther’s colour landscapes focus on colour without a rigid grid or depictive form. The landscapes flow to represent the changeable nature of a natural or urban environment. Thick textured paint gives depth and shifting light whilst lines vary from harsh to soft, creating fluidity throughout the piece.

Autumn Lakes
Painted with acrylic on canvas in Cumbria (UK) the series Autumn Lakes is inspired by the beautiful mountains and tarns of the Lake District.Esther travels to the Lake District every year settling usually in Great Langdale. In this series, distance is created with soft greys, blues and purples. The depth of the mountain lakes is shown by deep blues, whilst yellows and oranges sing of the dry grass, bracken and lichen that pepper the rocky terrain.
Paris Skyscape
Esther moved to Paris (France) in early 2021 where she set up her studio in Gaîté (14e Arr). Exploring the world around her, Esther was fell in love with the white washed walls and grey-blue of the lead roofs, cut-through by an abundance of greenery flowing from every balcony. Paris Skyscape is a new series developed from charcoal sketches, digital landscapes and test pieces painted en plein air in coffee shops and parks around Paris. Painted with acrylic on canvas the Paris Skyscape II depicts the bustle of the urban environment with strong intersecting lines and softer, textured surfaces.
